Forest and Vital Landscape Protection, Conservation and Tree Planting

At CEA we focus on forest conservation and management as a critical game changer in the important work that has to be undertaken to mitigate global climate change challenges. We work with other leading researchers and natural resource management experts to essentially develop points of intervention in the environmentally sensitive vital ecosystems to Kenya’s social economic development.

Hazardous Waste Watch & Advocacy

Since 2008, Centre for Environmental Action (CEA) primary focus has been advocacy work against industrial polluters particularly secondary lead smelters. These illicit crude operators usually masquerade as scrap metal dealers. The organization has conducted several workshops for East Africa and local authorities as well as for general public to raise awareness on the dangers of heavy metal wastes.

Promoting Solar Power

Used batteries are sometimes often used in homes to power appliances such as radios and TVs and to bridge the frequent power cuts until it is completely un-rechargeable. Generally, the level of awareness of the environmental and health effects of discarded lead acid battery is very low in Eastern Africa.

Disaster Risk Management and Preparedness

Natural and man-made disasters have exacted a heavy toll on Kenya’s national development and impacted negatively on the well-being and safety of communities. It has negatively affected livelihoods, people’s lives are changed dramatically in various ways, with women, children and people in vulnerable situations disproportionately affected.

Natural Resources Based Conflicts

Whatever the conflict situation and however it is characterized, conflict management strategies must be responsive to the particular situation in which a conflict occurs. It is one thing to recognize and define a conflict; it is quite another to attempt to manage it. CEA has been involved in highlighting and addressing conflicts together with the communities involved. Water is particularly a contestable commodity in many parts of Eastern Africa.
